Guided tearing: The ruler test

چکیده
The physical rules governing the tearing of a packaging or piece paper are not completely elucidated despite being common phenomena in daily life. Here, we investigate how presence straight rigid object, ruler, guides fracture thin sheet within wide range pulling directions. In case isotropic brittle sheets, simple geometrical analysis shows that follows direction vector, which differs significantly from direction. addition to geometry, bending energy material anisotropy has be implemented thicker anisotropic predict propagation. A generalization Wulff-type construction introduced by Takei et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 144301 (2013)] accounts successfully for our experimental results.

Modelling the Golomb Ruler
The Golomb ruler problem has been proposed as a challenging constraint satisfaction problem. We consider a large number of di erent models of this problem, both binary and non-binary. The problem can be modelled using quaternary constraints, but in practice using a set of auxiliary variables and ternary constraints gives better results. A binary encoding of the problem gives a smaller search tr...
متن کاملTearing down the spindle
isassembly of the mitotic spindle takes some effort, according to Kan Cao, Yixian Zheng (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD), and colleagues, who show that an ATPase and its binding partners pull apart the spindle. The spindle is put together by assembly factors that are activated by the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdc2. The loss of Cdc2 activity at the end of mitosis has thus been the convent...
متن کاملTearing down the Internet
Recent advances in scale-free networks have claimed that their topologies are very weak against attacks. The inhomogeneous connectivity distribution of large-scale current communication networks, such as the Internet, could be exploited by evil hackers in order to damage these systems. However, there have not been many studies on the approaches and consequences of such targeted attacks. In this...
متن کاملThe Carpenter’s Ruler Folding Problem
A carpenter’s ruler is a ruler divided into pieces of different lengths which are hinged where the pieces meet, which makes it possible to fold the ruler. The carpenter’s ruler folding problem, originally posed by Hopcroft, Joseph and Whitesides, is to determine the smallest case (or interval on the line) into which the ruler fits when folded. The problem is known to be NP-complete. The best pr...
